Back in 2012, one of my clients visited my office with a simple but important financial goal planning for his daughter’s marriage.
At that time, his daughter was just three years old, giving him an investment horizon of nearly 20 years.
The client had never invested in mutual funds or direct equity. He was highly conservative and preferred investments with very limited risk.
We discussed various investment options, including mutual funds and direct equity, but he was most comfortable with gold. That sparked an idea.
Instead of accumulating physical gold over the years, I suggested investing in Gold ETF units.
In 2012, physical gold prices were around ₹3,000 per gram, and Gold ETF prices generally moved in line with physical gold prices.
I explained the practical advantages of Gold ETFs over physical gold:
Why Gold ETF Instead of Physical Gold?
No storage worries – Gold ETF units are held electronically in a Demat account, eliminating the need for lockers and reducing theft risk.
Lower transaction costs – Only brokerage charges apply during buying and selling. There is no Securities Transaction Tax (STT).
Easy decision-making – Since there is no emotional attachment to physical jewellery, selling decisions become easier.
No making charges – Unlike jewellery, Gold ETFs do not attract making charges.
High purity – Gold ETFs closely reflect the value of 24-carat gold.
Price movement similar to gold – As physical gold prices rise; Gold ETF prices generally move in a similar direction.
Avoiding buy-sell price gaps – Physical gold often involves differences between purchase and selling prices, along with additional taxes and jewellery-making costs, which can reduce overall efficiency.
I then asked him a simple question:
“How much gold can you comfortably accumulate every month?”
Considering gold prices at that time, he replied:
“I am comfortable investing equivalent to 2 grams of gold every month.”
I suggested a disciplined approach:
“Then buy Gold ETF units equivalent to 2 grams every month, irrespective of market price. Stay consistent whether prices move up or down.”
He agreed.
We then worked through a simple calculation.
If he invested the equivalent of 2 grams every month:
In one year, he would accumulate around 24 grams worth of Gold ETF units.
In 10 years, around 240 grams.
In 20 years, around 480 grams.
Since 10 grams roughly equals one tola, he could potentially accumulate around 48 tolas of gold equivalent over time.
I explained that most middle-class families would not require jewellery worth the entire accumulated amount.
A portion could be used for jewellery, while the remaining value could support marriage-related expenses such as:
• Wedding venue
• Engagement ceremony
• Mehendi and Haldi functions
• Reception and other celebrations
We also discussed alternative possibilities.
What if his daughter preferred a simpler wedding and wanted financial support for entrepreneurship instead?
In that case, the accumulated value could help her start a business.
Or, if she preferred a simple ceremony and was financially independent, the family could choose a modest celebration and use the funds differently, even for long-postponed personal goals or travel (what about the idea of world tour with your spouse?)
The client appreciated this practical and flexible approach to financial planning.
Over time, I began sharing this example with many of my clients. Several of them started investing in Gold ETFs alongside equity investments as part of portfolio diversification and long-term planning.
I also followed the same discipline personally.
From 2012 to 2023, I invested consistently in Gold ETF units every month, irrespective of price.
My first purchase in UTI Gold ETF was at ₹2,828.95 per unit on August 27, 2012.
Later, after a split in 2021, the unit structure changed, making smaller quantities more accessible. Now 100 UTI Gold ETF approximates 1 gm physical gold and price is Rs.11,725/- My portfolio shows more than 300% profit in Gold ETF investment.
Looking at long-term results reinforced an important lesson for me:
